Good post Joel, and you are right. It is vital to know your market.

This might be a good idea for another post, but could you explain how to go about identifying the target market in your niche. What are some of the places you would goto and some of the things you would look for.

Thanks,

Some good information Joel as I see that as a real problem for a lot of people, me included. Trying to determine just what your customers or the market want. It is good to be reminded that you are trying to sell to a niche market and what may work well for one may not work well for another. Thanks.

Some great thoughts you brought up Joel. I'm slowly preparing to run an affiliate program and I should do some better research and make sure i know my affiliates.

Thanks
Fred

Great reminder, Joel! It's distressing how often I see affiliates trying to market to a variety of niches using the same list; once you've defined the niches you want to work within as an affiliate, begin building a SEPARATE list for each niche. This will give you a much better picture of what buyers are interested in for each niche, as will searches for the top products in each niche, or looking through ClickBank to see which products are currently selling best.

Once you've identified what's selling well currently, see what methods are being used to sell it - try their e-zine if one is offered, join their affiliate program to see what resources they've provided their affiliates with, etc.

Joel, I have read before that you need to know your customers. What I don't know is how to really do that. I have surveyed my list in the past and got very little response.

Also, I do not know how to do a client profile as Mike refers to above. Maybe someday you could elaborate on all of the concepts. Maybe start a series on getting to know your potential customer.

Thank you for the comments.

In reply Earl... what I meant was that you should research your market as a whole, what the majority of that market is like. Like what Mike commented above, you should create a client profile of the average visitor/customer in that niche.

You don't have to know exactly what each of your subscribers are like, but the overall market.

With that said, if your market has sub-markets which are a bit different in terms of how you should market to them, then you might want to separate those people.

So what if you have a list that isn't very well differentiated? I know I could do a survey to get some idea of what those who took the survey are about, but would that be reflective of the whole? And how would I go about sorting folk?

Great point. One of the things I always try and do when entering a niche is create a client profile to find out who and more importantly how they want information.
